Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB): Benefits and Maintenance

The incredible power of a Porsche requires an equally outstanding braking system, and that’s what you get with PCCB.

Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, also known as PCCB, deliver a performance that rivals what you’d find on a racetrack. In this guide, we explain the benefits of PCCB brakes in more detail, and the recommended Porsche PCCB maintenance which will keep your auto in prime condition.

Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes: Benefits and Maintenance

What Are Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes?

Many braking systems use cast iron, which is a heavy material, but in contrast, PCCB use a ceramic disc reinforced with carbon fiber. This means PCCB are around 50% lighter, shaving off around 20kg from the weight of the car despite being larger.

The Benefits of Porsche PCCB

Lightweight

The lighter weight of the PCCB translates into a better performance on the road, which is roughly equivalent to changing from heavy to light tires. This is because it reduces the unsprung mass, enhancing the dynamics of the vehicle. Other benefits directly attributable to the lighter weight include faster acceleration, lower fuel consumption, and sharper handling.

Superior Grip

The composition of the ceramic brakes doesn’t just mean a lighter weight. The materials used in PCCB have a higher friction coefficient, which is stable across a full temperature range. This means they have an unparalleled grip in all road conditions, with no reduction in performance after heavy or repeated braking.

Durable

Even though PCCB are lightweight, they are incredibly strong and resistant to heat. This means that they are less likely to warp or degrade as a result of high pressure or temperatures. The ceramic composition is resistant to rust and won’t suffer from salt corrosion in the winter months. Although the brake performance will depend on driving style, all of this means that on average PCCB should last 160,000 miles longer than conventional brakes.

Porsche PCCB Maintenance

Despite being a high-performance braking system, the maintenance requirements for PCCB are low. Less brake dust is produced from PCCB, which makes them easier to keep clean. Routine maintenance therefore is nothing more complicated than a simple wash with a PH-neutral shampoo to remove grit and dirt.

Although you should check your brakes regularly for any visible signs of wear and tear, Porsche recommends an annual inspection, or every 10,000 miles if less. Brake fluid should normally be replaced every two years, or at 20,000 miles. However, your Porsche center will be able to advise exactly what’s needed for your car.
